I have upgraded from CX300 to CX400ii to the IE6 and finally I have saved for the IE80. The reason being that I was so impressed with the IE6, I hoped the flagship model would be and even bigger step up. Surely they would put the IE6 to shame, being twice the price? Well not quite in reality but I put that down to the IE6 bieng so impressive in the first place. It’s true that the IE80 do have a deeper, punchier bass over a wider range and it is better balanced. The sound stage is also a little wider and the vocals are certainly a little more alive and richer. It seems absurd to call the IE6 noise ‘tinny’ but in comparison, they do seem a little bit. The IE80 no doubt beat them hands down and they are the most impressive sound I have heard anywhere. The issue here though is that all of these improvements in sound quality are actually very marginal. I had to compare with real scrutiny, (before burn-in), to be completely satisfied that I had spent my money well. They are the ultimate product Sennheiser have to offer, (and in my opinion, that anybody has to offer as I like my bass.), but to justify the price hike over their little brothers is conentious. I think it’s worth it as I’m a real sound geek but you need to be a self-confessed audiophile to really justify them. Just a little perspective though: I compared them to some £200 Beats Audio cans. They were an utter embarassment, much like Bose. Do your research people. These IE80 are undisputed as the best dynamic driver headphones available. Nothing comes close. If you want to go for armature headphones in the same price range you can not get the same bass or as much range. This is a technological limitation. What Sennheiser have done is produce a sound to rival armature headphones but with the beautiful bass of a big dynamic driver. They are just incredible; the ultimate headphone and I will not be upgrading this time.

A great IEM but has too many flaws, 2 Feb 2012

I initially was going to go for the Sennheiser IE6 but as it was an open backed design and I use headphones mainly when travelling I thought I would take a gamble on the closed back version, the CX6. My concern was the reviews were very hit and miss.
My main problem with them was getting them to fit correctly, which is essential if you are going to get the best out of these IEM’s. I tried every plug supplied but they just would not stay in and give a good seal. As a result I found that the sound had no bass, the mids were overly emphasized and the top end was either shrill or missing. Even the earphones Apple supply as standard sounded better.
So I decided to get some Comply T-400′s to see if it would help.

It is early days but so far the difference is phenomenal. They actually sound like a quality IEM, well balanced sound, controlled highs and thumping but not ear shattering bass. Vocals are well presented and the soundstage is not overly huge but I feel after some burn in, these will a very capable IEM.

My only other gripe is the cable. It is not the thickest to start with and I have some concerns over robustness. I also find that, unless you use the ear guides with the cable, they just flap about and fall over the ears which is pretty annoying.

All in all, the sound quality is very good only as long as you can get them to fit properly. I just find it pretty poor that you need to pay out nearly another £20 to get them to perform as they should.

Sennheiser CX6, outstanding sound and looks., 2 Jan 2011

cheaper Sennheiser’s have strong bass but lack some what in detail. but still give you outstanding sound over most brands.

the CX6 is not a cheap low end IEM earphone, for the price you get a secret gem. you get the same drive as used in the IE6 but with noise blocking.

don’t leave a bad review just because you were sill and got fake headphone from market place or some too cheap to be true retailer.

don’t leave a bad review if you couldn’t read the manual and select the right tips.

the tip selection is good and is fine for most people, but im a sound freak and wanted the best for my money so i got some foam tips (you can buy them online) sound quality and noise isolation are really good and you get more then what you paid for. wide dynamic range with smooth very low extended bass.

I would like to add Sennheiser are a leader with over 60 years in the business they know what to do and how to do it well.

Got to agree with the other 1 star reviewer, these earphones just dont do what they are supposed to do.
I also am in full agreement about the fit, these are billed as universal earphones yet with all the tips included not one fits well enough.
I tried many different tips ranging from ultimate ears to sony ones and not one sealed in my ear properly.
The only pair of tips that sort of worked were the medium silicone ones already fitted but even these kept losing the seal.
These are billed as having up to 90% attenuation of background noise and it’s just not true, even when i had a seal when i wasn’t moving around i could still hear everything around me albeit slightly (really slightly) muffled so saying these are great for the train or plain is wrong because you would definitely still hear everything!
Sound quality however isn’t too bad at all, nice dynamic sound with lots of detail but this is all a waste of time if you still hear everything around you instead of just the music, You may as well have no earphones in at all so it defeats the whole purpose of them.
For a nice sounding pair of earphones they are really nice and perform very well but if you want them for travel and to block out noise (which is what they are supposed to do!) forget it and look elsewhere.
    Very disappointing.
